PERSONAL PROFILE

My name is Ronald Keith Fraser. I am 70 years of age and I am the founder and director of New Direction Care Ministries Ltd. which works with youth suicide and drug prevention. I was raised on a pineapple farm at Beerwah, just an hour north of Brisbane on approximately 40 acres. You may know where this is because that is where the Australia Zoo is today. Yes, the Irwin’s purchased the land off my parents over a 5-year period. I am one of a family of 9 boys and 2 girls. At the age of 18 I was in North Queensland where I was introduced to drugs, marijuana at first. But eventually I progressed through to mushrooms, LSD, speed, cocaine and finally, heroin.

Ultimately, I became a drug dealer and one night we were driving past the police station and the voice of God spoke to me. One of the things the voice said to me was, “You need to go home and hide all that dope because tomorrow you are going to be busted.” The next morning at seven o’clock, the police came busting in. I woke up with them standing at the end of my bed with a gun in my face saying, “Okay Fraser we know you have it. Where is it?” I told them where it was, exactly were God told me to put some drugs so they would be happy. They booked me for possession and told me that if they hadn’t found anything they would have planted it on me. That day, God had saved me from a jail sentence and a criminal record.

The principle behaviours of most all societies are based on some kind of religion and most charities are based on a Christion belief or principle. The main principle is doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. New Direction Care Ministries Ltd is a Christian belief and principle organisation and will be helping people in this way.

The prevention of suicide therefore needs a co-ordinated response involving all levels of government, community, church, parents, and youth groups. All of these are required to tackle the serious self-harming behaviour of teenagers and young adults. More importantly, there is no quick-fix solution to a problem that has taken decades to evolve but we must respond and go beyond the short-term solutions of the political and social processes.

Youth suicide and drug prevention strategy needs to be bipartisan and sustained over time. In order to respond to the problem of suicide and drug abuse with young people, a comprehensive framework of intervention should be put in place. Current efforts which focused on early treatment for at-risk individuals could be described as incomplete in themselves. Prevention efforts must be based upon relationship. Only long-term relationships involving a 'time' commitment can reduce the likelihood of suicide and drug abuse.

We have to remember that the reason why a person would take their own life or subject themself to taking drugs, is either due to a lack of hope or a lack of direction. In most cases there are long term ‘root causes’ as well, compounding the situations. Suicide and drug abuse is not a disease. They are complex problems for which there is no one single cause or cure. There are biological, social, spiritual, psychological and environmental contributing factors. Remembering that suicide and drug related problems affect not only the individual struggling with these problems but also loved ones and the local communities as well. It is important to integrate all of the following steps when faced with suicide and drug related incidents.

Education and training options:

Programs and services which enhance young people's employment options, including pre-vocational training.

Programs for young people at risk:

Activities that address the particular issues of young people at risk.

Harm reduction:

Strategies that aim to reduce the harm caused to young people by substance use and other abuses.

Education and Employment:

The majority of young people at risk whether homeless or not, do not participate in education at any level. Education is a key component in future employability.

You may remember a saying that goes like this, "Idol hands are the devil’s playground." It is common for people who get out of jail to have no plan and after a week of sitting around watching TV and movies all day, become bored. Inevitably they fall back into their old lifestyle and before you know it they are back in jail.

After 17 years of being a Christian, God led me to do a four-year counselling course. At the time I was doing seminars and camps throughout the eastern parts of Australia and actively involved in counselling and working with individuals and families suffering from distress, poverty, marital crisis, divorce, domestic violence, suicidal tendencies, and emotional, sexual or physical abuse.

It was back in 1996 when God told me to build a youth suicide and drug prevention farm. This farm is to help educate and equip our young people against suicide and drug use with a prevention strategy. Through our “Training for Life” Program that targets the 14 to 25 year age group with a framework that will progressively increase the standard of living and quality of life for the young people, individuals and families of all ages that are seriously disadvantaged. God gave us instructions in (Proverbs 22:4) on how we should help our children to be better adults. Did you know that for every one suicide there are over 90 attempted suicides?

Proverbs 22:6. "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." “End of Quote”

Question: Why is it important to rase up a child in the way they should live?

Answer: Because no one has to teach them to do wrong. We have to teach them to do the right thing. This is why Christianity is so important. It is well known that if you train someone at a young age then you will get the best out of that person. So, therefore it is said when you get the boy you also get the man and if you get the girl you also get the woman.
